Nuno Espirito Santo odds on to be next Arsenal Manager
This morning, the morning after Arsenal’s defeat in the Europa League at home to Eintracht Frankfurt, Arsenal have finally dispensed with the services of Unai Emery and subsequently the race to replace him as manager has started. With Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo being installed as odds on favourite with the bookies, to take the helm at The Emirates.
The writing was on the wall for Emery since pretty much the start of the season, with bookmakers as far back as the beginning of September, of the view Emery would not see out the 2019 / 20 season.
Arsenal fans have become more and more vocal over recent weeks for the board to sack Emery. Last night’s defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt being the final straw, thus the board removed Emery, who arrived from French club Paris St Germain.
A statement from Arsenal this morning, issued on behalf of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and the club’s board by Josh Kroenke, said of Emery’s departure: “Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”
“The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required. We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward.”
“The search for a new head coach is underway and we will make a further announcement when that process is complete.”
In addition to Santo being installed as the bookmakers’ odds on favourite to be installed as new Arsenal manager, other candidates such as Mikel Arteta and Niko Kovac are in the running. Caretaker boss and former Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljungberg can also be backed at 7/1.
